Imphal, March 26 2014:
Postal ballots would be sent to employees outside the State to ensure their franchise in the coming Lok Sabha elections.
At the same time, a proposal has been made to the Election Commission of India of sending postal ballots to the designated camps of tripartite SoO signatory groups to ensure the suffrage of the cadres.
This was stated by Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Manipur, O Nabakishore Singh during a one-day mega interaction programme on Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) in connection with the ensuing LS poll at the Centenary Hall of Manipur University today.
O Nabakishore Singh said that although Jail inmates too deserve the privilege, there has been no provision of the ECI on extending the same privilege to the jail inmates.
The CEO further encouraged the participants of the programme mostly NYK and NSS volunteers, students and teachersto exercise their franchise and to convince others about their voting rights.
Saying that the minimum voting age has been lowered to 18 years in India to ensure larger participation of the youth in governance, the CEO urged the NSS volunteers to spread awareness on voting rights of the people.
He urged all concerned to cautiously exercise their franchises before pressing the button.
President of the function, Prof HNK Sarma, VC of Manipur University predicted that the voting behaviour of the State would witness a change in the next few years while also stressing the role of the youth towards this end.
An open quiz on election related issues and staging of a skit on electoral participation by Nokphade troupe also marked the programme.
