New Delhi, March 26 2014:
An incident of harassment and attack by their Landlord in Munirka, New Delhi was reported to the Vasant Vihar Police station last night around 10 by Mercy (25) wife of Thangminlian Vaiphei.
The family hails from Tangmual village in Churachandpur, Manipur.
According to Mercy, who delivered her second baby a few weeks back, she and her family were planning to go out for the evening to visit their relatives around 8-9 pm.
Informing their plan to their landlady that they would be coming after dinner and could possibly be late, Mercy requested her landlady to leave the gate open or give them a spare key so that they would not create disturbance.
But her good intention took an ugly turn.
The landlady began to argue with her, as to why they should be going out in the night and so on.
Subsequently, the landlord, Dharampal Tokas too intervened and began to threaten them with a rod.
"I was so scared, I remained silent," Mercy told The Sangai Express.
The argument was heard by the other tenants in the building who came down and began to take side with the landlord.
A fight ensued where Mercy's husband was physically assaulted and injured in his right arm and hand.
He was later taken to the hospital but with no major injury.
"I urged those who came not to interfere, as the matter was between us and our landlord, but they did not listen, they were about 7-8 persons who began to attack me," said Thangminlian.
Mercy's husband is a sepoy in the Indian Army posted in Jammu & Kashmir.
He was on maternity leave and arrived in Delhi last week to be with his family.
Currently the family are taking shelter with their relatives.
A case was registered in the wee hours today under IPC section 323/354/506/342/343 and ST and SC Act.
Seven persons have been remanded in the Police custody including the landlady along with her two sons, while the landlord is absconding.
When contacted by The Sangai Express, Police officers in-charge of the Vasant Vihar and Headquarters Haus Khas were tight lipped over the matter.
While officer on duty reiterated of being unauthorised to provide information, Inspectors / Investigating Officers and Commissioners were not available for comments and response.
