Imphal, April 01:
Following the strong case put up by the students and gurus of Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Akademi, Manipur, steps have been taken up for upgrading the same to a deemed University.
This was stated today by Governor SS Sidhu during the 54th Foundation Day celebration of the Akademi.
Dr Sidhu who is also the Chairman of the JNMDA graced the colourful function as chief guest, while Manipur Assembly Speaker Dr S Budhichandra was the president.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Sidhu said, "The basic objective (of changing it to a deemed University) is to make the certificates of the Akademi recognised throughout the country so that its students are treated at par with those coming out from other institutions and may compete for various openings on equal footing", he added.
Stressing on the need of 'change', Sidhu maintained, "it is inherent in the healthy survival of any institution to change and adapt with time, otherwise it (JNMDA) will become a dinosaur and outlive its purpose".
Acknowledging the inputs of the State Government, he said that the State had made available additional land to the Akademi of about 1 acre to construct necessary infrastructure.
He however stated categorically that "The responsibility of those who are at the helm of affairs of the Akademi at this crucial stage is tremendous and it is they who can ensure that the transition is smooth, hassle free and to the satisfaction of all concerned." Any wrong step at this stage may become a major stumbling block and we have to ensure that things go in the correct path, he said.
During his presidential address, Dr Budhichandra said that the present generation is losing discipline and concentration in all spheres.
"We must learn to gain spirituality and honesty from dance and music which are also parts of our tradition, culture and pride", he added.
He also lauded the contribution of the Academy in highlighting the culture of the State to the world during his speech.
Encouraging the students of the Academy and aspiring artists, Budhichandra said that a professional artist can earn a lot which can in turn beat the notion of being unemployed.
JNMDA director Yambem Laba during his welcome address mentioned various achievements and performances of the Academy.
Later students and artists of the Academy left the gathering spellbound with their scintillating performances on stage.
