The 74th commemoration of Zeliangrong Solidarity Day (ChukThoibo/Sumei) was observed at Sangaiprou community hall here today under the aegis of Zeliangrong Union (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland) along with a cultural razzmatazz and presentation of gifts to some elected MLAs and outstanding achievers.
It was on this day way back in 1934 that the sacred rite of Chuk-Sumei was performed to cleanse off the sin and enmity of the past inter-village feuds and killings as well as to strengthen the bond of unity among the kindred tribes.
Thus, the main purpose of the commemoration is to reaffirm the bond of unity and to shun any form of violence and bloodshed happening in Zeliangrong community.
The commemoration programme kicked off with oblation of wine to he Almighty God for his blessing, and it was followed by making of a new fire to light up the Solidarity candle by the president of the Union.
As the solidarity candle was being lit up, symbolising spreading of the message of love and peace to reaffirm the commitment of bond of unity, the mass exclamation of Hoi erupted.
Giving the key note address of the programme, Union president D Athuibou highlighted the significance of the historic event and called upon the people to strengthen the bond of unity and to maintain peaceful co-existence among the different communities residing in the States.
In his presidential address ZU (AMN) president James Rangshung made a fervent appeal to the elected MLAs and outstanding achievers from among the Zeliangrong community who were felicitated at the occasion, to dedicate their services for the welfare of the people to the people and to imbibe the zeal of their forefathers.
The elected representatives and outstanding achievers who were felicitated include Gaikhangam (MLA), Khangthuanang Panmei (MLA), Awangbow Newmai (MLA), Akhiam Panmei (IAS), Norbert Disinang (IAS), Angampu Kamei (IAS), Gaithaolu Thaimei, Joseph Poulin (MCS), Thaikui Rongmei (MCS), K Gopal Kabui (MCS), Dipu Gangmei (MCS), Hana Kamei (MCS), Ph Janglung (MPS), Daigong Gangmei (Jr MCS), PG Kachamthai (Jr MCS), Manglem Dangmei (Jr MCS), Dr Gaipuilu Palmeipui, Dr Lamalu Kameipui, Dr Elizabeth Palmeipui, Dr Shanganglung Pamei, Dr Gairingmei Maringmei, Dr Alana Gonmei, Dr Changongliu Kameipui, Dr Chungmeijei Mathew, Dr Nagonglung Remmei, Dr Gaisinglung, Dr Jenpui Kamei and Poujairung Thaimei.
The commemoration programme was enthralled by the tradition songs by Sangaiprou Mathenmeipui and cultural dances of Young Kabui Artistes' Association, Ragailong an KKYU Keishamthong.
