Health camp cum organ donation awareness drive held, dialysis center opened

In observance of World Kidney Day 2026, a health camp cum organ donation awareness campaign was successfully organised today at Wainem Rongmei Naga Village and Bungte Chiru in Bishnupur district under the theme, "Kidney Health for All: Caring for People, Protecting the Planet" .
The programme, organised by the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, aimed to promote awareness on kidney health and provide essential healthcare services to rural communities in the region.
During the camp, specialist doctors from multiple departments, including Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, and ENT, provided free OPD consultations and medical check-ups.
Around 150 patients from the surrounding villages availed themselves of the healthcare services, receiving medical advice, treatment, and necessary medications.
As part of the initiative, an awareness session on organ and tissue donation was conducted by healthcare professionals.
Informational pamphlets on organ donation and transplantation were distributed to educate the public about the importance of organ donation, early detection of kidney diseases, and the benefits of adopting healthy lifestyles.
Free medicines were also distributed to all patients.
The event was supported by volunteers from the villages, with Prof Ranjan Gondamei of IIT Roorkee among the hosts coordinating the overall health camp programme.
The initiative witnessed active participation from local residents, who expressed appreciation for the medical team's efforts in bringing specialized healthcare services directly to their villages.
ILDS
World Kidney Day was also observed today at the Institute of Liver and Digestive Sciences (ILDS) in Kwakeithel Heinoukhongnembi, Imphal.
The event was highlighted by the inauguration of a new 12-bed dialysis center aimed at providing free services to eligible patients.
The newly established 24-hour dialysis center will offer free dialysis to patients holding CMHT and PMJAY cards.
This initiative is expected to provide significant relief to many patients requiring regular dialysis.
Dr Naorem Sharath Kumar, Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician at ILDS, noted the increasing prevalence of kidney disease globally.
Studies indicate that approximately one in ten people suffer from kidney ailments, a number that is rising with population growth.
The World Kidney Day event and the new center address this growing health challenge.
Dr N Suraj Kumar, Director of ILDS Hospital, expressed his happiness at the inauguration of the center under Dr N Sharat's leadership, emphasizing that patients with CMHT and PMJAY cards should take advantage of this new facility.
