International Literacy Day observed at MU

Imphal, September 08 2026: The Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension (ACEE), Manipur University observed the 60th International Literacy Day at its conference hall today on the theme "Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity" .

On the occasion, students of the department who had taught illiterate persons at Mahabali Kabui Khul and Moirangkhom Kabui Khul for 45 days were felicitated and distributed certificates.

People who became literate through the initiative were also felicitated.

Speaking as chief guest, Vice Chancellor in-charge Prof RK Hemakumar said the department has been imparting literacy to illiterate persons every year and it is a great contribution.

He said students by sharing the knowledge they have gained as students to the public is a valuable service.

He said Manipur is going through a difficult time due to the unprecedented violence but continuing literacy work amid such situations helps in building the society.

He said those who have become literate should not be seen merely as neo-literates but they will also help in teaching other illiterates and children.

HOD of ACEE Prof A Jolly said the department's contribution is significant as its teachers guide the students and the students in turn teach illiterates.

She said everyone has a role to play in building a developed and literate society as part of global developments.

She said literacy rate is low in South Asian countries and women face many challenges and academicians and students need to work on how to overcome such issues in Manipur.

Dean of School of Education Prof Premlata Maisnam, teachers of the department and students attended the observance.

A book containing field reports was also released.
