Court frames charges against Shishu cashier

The Court of Session Judge, Imphal West has framed charges against 50-year old Tonambam Henarita Devi, cashier-cum-accountant at Shishu Nistha Niketan, Kwakeithel Mayaikoibi for allegedly misappropriating a huge amount of school fund by misusing her position.
After investigation of the case based on the complaint lodged by the Principal of Shishu Nistha Niketan, a charge sheet was submitted against Tonambam Henarita w/o Moirangthem Natjit of Sagolband Tera, Sayang Road.
The charge sheet said that the accused has been serving as the cashier-cum-accountant at Shishu Nistha Niketan, Kwakeithel Mayaikoibi, Imphal West since the establishment of the school.
She had been receiving and collecting admission fees, tuition fees and transportation fees etc from the students of the school.
Being the cashier-cum-accountant, she must deposit the amount so collected or received by her either with the school authority or in the school's bank accounts.
Following strong suspicion of misappropriation of money, the school authority initiated an enquiry and it was found that the accused neither deposited the amount she collected in the forms of admission fees, tuition fees and transportation fees etc with the concerned school authority nor in the school's bank accounts June 2024 till January 2025 amounting to Rs 24,82,200 .
In order to conceal the alleged wrongdoing, the accused remained absent from the school from February 7, 2025 till date.
Subsequently, a show cause notice was served on her, but she replied with false excuses.
The accused family also acquired properties and constructed a residential building recently which are disproportionate to her income and to those of her family members, according to the charge sheet.
The Court, after hearing the submission of PP, the defence counsel of the accused and on perusal of the submitted charge sheet, observed that in the present case the amount allegedly misappropriated by the accused is huge and it is possible that the accused may be imprisoned up to 10 year or she may get even life imprisonment if convicted under section 315(6) of BNS.
The Court then framed charges against the accused under sections 316(4), 316(5) and section 238(b) of BNS for trial and fixed December 3 for hearing/ recording statements of prosecution witnesses.
