Imphal, July 19 2010:
Khuga Dam Contractors and Sub-Contractors' Association has opposed the inauguration of Khuga Multipurpose Project before clearance of their pending bills.
Addressing a press conference in this connection at Hotel Excellency here today, Association president Lienmang Gangte informed that since the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Government of Manipur began construction work on the Project in 1982, in all 45 contractors and sub-contractors have been engaged for necessary earth work, the same of which was completed in 2008 .
However, after payment of 30 percent of the wages, the remaining 70 percent have not been cleared till date.
A memorandum in this regard had been submitted to the Chief Minister on April 13 last.
As no response has been received, the Association has stopped all the works related to the project and preventing other staff from entering the project site since April 20, Lienmang Gangte informed.
The Govt is fully aware that the ongoing agitation of the Association has paralysed the project and affected the farmers.
But instead of trying to bring about a solution, the Govt has decided to inaugurate the project.
This is not acceptable, the Association president said.
He also made it clear that the Association should not be responsible for any eventuality of the inauguration.
