Tamenglong, February 07 2018:
The Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong, Armstrong Pame, along with Tamenglong Police, the Rainforest Club Tamenglong and Wildlife Warden, Dr Chambo Gonmei, inspected the Gadai hill at Tamenglong HQs today.
The team was surprised and dismayed to find many illegal human activities/encroachment on the hill when the District Administration and Forest Departments concerned were planning to conserve the forest, more importantly for supply of water to Tamenglong HQs.
Last year, the Forest Department and the District Administration initiated works at the hill in an attempt to conserve the forest.
They marked out about 200 trees for conservation.
To their utter dismay, today, they found that most of the marked trees were cut down for timber and firewood by the local residents.
The team also found a manual saw-mill which were used to cut the timber for planks.
One Rainforest Club Tml member recounted that he had witnessed a numbers of trees fell down for timbers last week.
But those timbers were not seen today.
On the other side of the hill, the team also discovered a stone quarry where some local residents had cleared some part of the jungle to mint stone for sale.
The team also found some buffaloes being tied to trees although animal rearing is banned in this area.
Some workers who were hired to cut the timbers were taken to the Police Station for investigation.
The Deputy Commissioner of Tml have issued strict order to ban illegal encroachments and activities in the area.
