State team to reach out to Nepal quake victims

A 15-member team of Disaster Relief Committee, Manipur (DRCM) and Indian Red Cross Society, Manipur State branch is set to visit the earthquake affected areas of Nepal to extend support and provide relief materials to the victims, said Jacko Meetei, convenor of DRCM while speaking at a press conference held at the office of Centre for Organization Research and Education (CORE), at Babupara today.
Two days after the unfortunate incident ravaged the mountain Nation, various civil society organizations and NGOs of the State held a meeting at the office of CORE and formed a body known as Disaster Relief Committee, Manipur to reach out to the people of Nepal.
He said that a large number of people belonging to indigenous Nepali community residing in rural and interior villages of Nepal were affected by the catastrophic incident.
Jacko Meetei also said that these areas are facing massive difficulties and suffering due to poor communication and infrastructure.
After getting proper training from different experts, a 15-member joint team would leave for Nepal on May 9, he said.
The team would mainly focus on providing aid to the people residing in interior areas, Jacko Meetei said.
The team would consist of trained individuals from medical, psychological, health, logistics and development sectors, he said and added that they would provide emergency medical service in child health, women's needs, mental health and shelter etc.
The team would also initiate works on preparation of property reconstruction and rehabilitation of the victims in consultation with local partners of Nepal.
In this regard, Jacko Meetei appealed to individuals, NGOs, CSOs, private sector hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, different institutions and Government Departments to donate generously in cash or kinds for the victims of Nepal.
He also said that the committee has been formed not only for Nepal but also for looking after the needs of the people at the time of emergency.
Indian Red Cross Society, Manipur State branch secretary, Y Mohen said that they are waiting for permission from the External Affairs Ministry for their assistance to Nepal.
The team would leave the State after they get the permission, he added.
The team is likely to reach the affected areas two weeks after the massive earthquake had struck the neighbouring country, he said.
As the country is likely to face outbreak of various water borne diseases after some days, the team would look after hygiene needs at the areas where people are rehabilitated.
