Kangpokpi, May 02 2015 :
The All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) has slammed the 25 Assam Rifles personnel under the command of Maj Vinod for allegedly harassing a Custom officer on April 27 .
ATSUM alleged that Major Vinod and his jawans intentionally abused and harassed Gaikhonlung Panmei, IRS, Assistant Commissioner of Customs, Department of Revenue who was on official duty at a check post manned by the AR at Thonglang Akutpa along Imphal-Tamenglong road despite the Customs officer showing his official identity card and name plate on his vehicle at around 10 am of April 27 .
ATSUM's Rights and Reservation secretary, Simthar Jajo said that the IRS officer on official duty was travelling in an official vehicle with flag post and name plate.
He wondered how can a Major just does not care to study the situation and identify the credential of the young officer and his entourage.
Terming the incident another 'Dark Chapter' for the men in uniform, Simthar Jajo regretted that such unruly behaviour of the AR personnel brought bad name to the whole security forces.
He said that intentional abusing of power under the garb of AFSPA by the men in uniform should not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Despite submitting a complaint letter to the Commandant of 25 AR, Lairouching by the IRS officer, no concrete step has been initiated by the AR authority so far, alleged Simthar Jajo.
He also asked the higher authority of AR to rein in the guilty and indisciplined personnel at the earliest and tender apologies for the alleged unethical behaviour.
He further urged the AR authority to ensure that such incidents do not recur in future.
