Early diagnosis matters: Alzheimer's Day observed at RIMS, Shija Hospitals

Imphal, September 21 2026: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal and Shija Hospitals & Research Institute observed World Alzheimer's Day 2026 today under the global theme "The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do: A Dementia Diagnosis Matters".

At RIMS, the programme was held at the New OPD Block of RIMS Hospital.

The event was graced by Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS; Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS Hospital; Dr S Gojendra Singh, Professor & Head, Department of Psychiatry; and Dr Ashem Thoibisana.

Addressing the gathering, Prof Sunil Kumar Sharma emphasized the need for greater awareness, early recognition and timely intervention in Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

Highlighting the theme, he said early diagnosis enables appropriate care, family support and ensures dignity and understanding for persons living with dementia.

He also appreciated the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurology for their continued efforts.

As part of the observance, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials and leaflets on Alzheimer's disease were released by the Director at Psychiatry OPD and distributed among patients, attendants and healthcare workers.

The initiative was jointly undertaken by the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurology.

On the occasion, RIMS also achieved a milestone at the Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases.

Prof Sunil Kuamr Sharma distributed medicines under the National Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD), 2021 to four children suffering from Cystic Fibrosis, a Group-II rare disease, at the Genetic Clinic.

Officials said the step strengthens access to treatment for rare diseases in the North East.

Meanwhile, Shija Hospitals & Research Institute in collaboration with Indian Psychiatric Society, Manipur State Branch (IPS-MSB) observed the day at Shija Hospitals.

Dr RK Nayansana Devi, former Chairperson, Manipur State Social Welfare Board attended as chief guest, Dr Nelson Loitongbam, Assistant Professor, Psychiatry, JNIMS as guest speaker, Prof Mayengbam Akshaykumar Singh, former Head of Clinical Psychology, RIMS and Dr Palin Khundongbam, Chairman and Managing Director, Shija Hospitals as guests of honour and Prof Koijam Shantibala, Head of Psychiatry, Shija Hospitals & SAHS and President.

Speakers highlighted the progressive nature of Alzheimer's, its impact on cognition, judgement, communication and independence, and stressed the importance of social engagement, meaningful activities, caregiver support and addressing stigma.

Caregivers were urged to approach patients with patience, dignity and compassion.

Oinam Mangi, founder of Old Age Home, Langol was felicitated.

Senior citizens from Old Age Homes at Langol and Mongshangei were provided blankets and health supplements.

Dr Nayansana Devi donated Rs 10,000 to IPS-MSB and presented books authored by her to the dignitaries.
