Food Safety Training Programme begins

A 4-Day Food Safety Training Programme for street food vendors began yesterday at City Convention Centre, Palace Compound under the theme, "Serve Safe Food".
The training programme was organised by the National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) with the support of Food Safety Administration, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Manipur, Nestle India, Food Safety Training & Certification (FoSTaC) and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) .
Speaking on the occasion, Somorjit Salam, Special Secretary (Health & Family Welfare) Manipur said that while the concept of food safety has existed in various forms throughout history, a modern, comprehensive approach to food safety is relatively recent in India, compared to many developed nations.
He asserted the country's food safety framework has evolved significantly, particularly with the establishment of the FSSAI and the implementation of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006."Food safety is important to prevent foodborne illnesses from improper food handling by street food handlers", said Somorjit while adding that improving food hygiene among street vendors is crucial for public health, economic development, and tourism.
Somorjit further shared that by enhancing hygiene practices, vendors can reduce foodborne illnesses, attract more customers, and contribute to a more vibrant and safe food culture.
Dr Chambo Gonmei, Director of Health Services and Additional Commissioner of Food Safety, Manipur; Sanjay Simon Sen, Senior Manager Corporate Affairs, Nestle India; Surijit Mukherjee, Head-Branch Corporate Affairs, Nestle India and Dr Taruna Saxena, Head, Sustainability & Societal Initiatives, Nestle India were also present at the event as dignitaries.
Notably, training will be given to about 300 street food vendors from Imphal during the four-days long programme.
