Imphal, November 07 2026:
The North East Community Organisation Pune (NECOP) and Manipur Students' Association Pune (MSAP) have raised urgent concern over persistent racism, social discrimination and safety challenges faced by people from Northeast India living in Pune.
In a press release, the organisations said that despite the Northeast being celebrated for its warm hospitality, its people continue to face exclusion and prejudice within their own country.
Community members are regularly subjected to racial bias based on physical appearance, cultural practices, dietary habits and lifestyle, it alleged.
They said Northeast women face heightened vulnerability and harassment due to racial profiling, restrictions on personal freedom, continuous public scrutiny, and visual and physical harassment in public spaces.
Men from the region also face verbal abuse, racial slurs and physical harassment.
The organisations said recurring discrimination leaves community members feeling isolated and unsafe, eroding their sense of belonging despite India's principle of "unity in diversity".
Pune, regarded as a premier educational and professional hub, draws thousands of young people from the Northeast seeking better opportunities.
However, the organisations said the prevailing social climate often makes Northeast students and residents feel alienated and unwelcome.
They appealed to civil society, educational institutions, local authorities and the public to foster genuine inclusivity, dismantle racial stereotypes, and ensure a safe and respectful environment for all citizens.
