Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West, yesterday, rejected the bail application filed by the Principal and the Coordinator of Standard Robarth Hr Secondary School and instead, remanded both of them into judicial custody for 14 days (till August 19) .
The coordinator of the school, Pheroijam Romita w/o Raja of Kwakeithel Thiyam Leikai, was produced before the Court from police custody while the founder cum Principal of the school, Pheiroijam Landhoni w/o Ibohal of Canchipur was brought in an ambulance with health care workers from police custody (though she was admitted to a hospital during the present police custody) along with a prayer for remanding them in judicial custody for 15 days.
On the other hand, the defense counsel of Pheiroijam Romita filed remand objection along with a prayer for releasing her on bail on health ground.
The defense counsel submitted that she is not involved at all in the case and she is a mother having two children and it was only due to public frenzy that she was arrested.
It was further submitted that there is no specific charge against her and the investigation is related to the death of the student and not for other issues like corporal punishment, the school being unrecognized etc.
After hearing the submission of both sides, the Court observed that the present case is a very sensitive case and the charges are quite serious and grave.
It further observed that the materials submitted showed that Landhoni is suffering from some ailments.
Romita is also allegedly said to have chest pain but the medical report show no such ailment, the Court ruled.
It opined that Landhoni has some medical issues but the same are not life threatening and can be managed from jail at the MI room and at JNIMS and as such, remanded both individuals into judicial custody for 14 days (till August 19).The Court also directed the SP Imphal Central Jail for continued treatment of Ph Landhoni in consultation with the doctor concerned.
On the other hand, police foiled attempts by women vendors of Ima market to storm Cheirap Court complex while the founder/Principal and coordinator of the school were produced before the Court yesterday.
From early morning yesterday, a large number of Imphal West district police personnel and Imphal West commando along with women police, were deployed in and around the Court complex to prevent any unwanted incident.
Police put up iron barricade along the road leading towards the Court complex and prevented private vehicles from travelling in front of the complex.
Later, Ima Market women vendors began a protest demonstration but were prevented from going towards the complex by the police personnel.
However, a leader of the women vendors along with a few members of the JAC, were allowed to go inside the Court complex and attend the proceeding.
When the Principal and coordinator were brought from JNIMS in an ambulance and from Women PS Imphal West respectively, at around 2.30 pm, some of the womenfolk and JAC member launched a protest on the road demanding punishment of those involved.
Later after the hearing, while the two individuals were being taken to the police vehicles, the womenfolk tried to give chase but the police vehicle and ambulance sped away from the area.
The disgruntled women then staged a protest at Maharani bridge disturbing the free flow of traffic in the area.
However, the situation was quickly brought under control by police.
