Imphal, February 03 2020: Pointing out the reduction in industrial development, low economy and drug menace as the main problems and challenges plaguing the North East region, CAF&PD Minister Karam Shyam has called for collective effort and cooperation among the people of the region towards solving the said problems.

He was speaking as the chief guest in the inaugural function of the North East National Service Scheme (NSS) Festival which began today at Manipur University, Canchipur, Imphal.

Further claiming that the Government of India, with its Act East Policy, is taking up many developmental programmes in the States of North East region, the Minister said that India cannot be developed without developing the North East region.

The Minister continued that the North East region is facing many hindrances owing to its difficult geographical distribution.

"The North East Region has a unique culture and identity.

We have to preserve it.

Our art and culture and sports are famous.

Our North East people need to be smarter and work harder in order to make ourselves proud despite our geographical hindrances", he said.

Noting that the North East region is being invaded by drugs, with many youths being fallen prey to it, Karam Shyam maintained that people in the region must collectively fight against the drug menace.

While stating that the economy of the North East region is not in a good position and the development in the industrial sector is in a lower level owing to various geographical factor, the Minister also opined that new avenues for economic development should be found out by the youths of the region.

Saying that youth is an important stage of life from where one shapes his/her final model of life, he asked the youths in North East States to be good human resources.

Karam Shyam then urged the youths in the North East to have better understanding and cooperation among themselves and strive together towards solving the problems besieging the region.

Maintaining that the NSS festival is a programme that helps in making youths "a wealth of the Nation", the Minister said that one should learn the good services which a society or a Nation require from this festival.

The inaugural function of the five day long festival was also attended by Manipur University Professor Amar Yumnam, Professor M Ranjit Singh, Professor Th Ratan Kumar Singh and NSS, Guwahati Regional Director Dipak Kumar as the president and guests of honor respectively.

Cultural dances which include pung cholom and dhulok performance marked the main events on the first day of the festival.

Technical sessions on life skills and personality development and many events like Yoga, cultural dances of various States and solo performances will also be conducted in the following days of the festival.

Around 300 NSS volunteers from eight States of the North East, including Sikkim are participating in the festival which will be concluded on February 6.Social Welfare Dept in 3rd place for implementation of PMMVY.
