Forest Dept celebrates International Day of Forests, 'Ningol Van Initiative' launched

The Forest Department, Government of Manipur, marked the International Day of Forests with a significant event at Lamdeng Makha Leikai, Imphal West yesterday.
The celebration, actively attended by officials, Civil Society Organisations, Meira Paibis, students, JFMC members, and local residents, highlighted the critical role of forests in the State's economy and the importance of community conservation efforts.
The event was graced by dignitaries, including Anurag Bajpai, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Head of Forest Force (PCCF & HoFF) and Additional Chief Secretary (TCI & Transport); Soreiphy Vashum, APCCF; L Joykumar Singh, CCF T-1; and Gaithaolu Thaimei, CCF T-2 .

A key highlight of the event was the launch of the "Ningol Van Initiative", a meaningful step towards strengthening community participation in forest conservation.
The initiative emphasizes the vital role of women (Ningols) in nurturing nature, protecting biodiversity, and promoting a sustainable future.
Addressing the gathering, Anurag Bajpai emphasized that forests are the backbone of the State's economy, covering more than 74% of Manipur's geographical area.
He noted that forests sustain livelihoods, ensure food security, and will play an increasingly important role in meeting future food needs.

He also highlighted the pivotal role of women in the State's primary economic sector, noting that under the Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs), 11 micro foodprocessing units have been established, 95% of which are run by women.
Expressing concern over challenges such as man-made forest fires, illegal earth/stone/boulder excavation, and illegal poppy cultivation, Anurag Bajpai urged collective efforts to address them and reiterated strong action against such illegal activities.
He informed that 970 hectares of poppy cultivation in hill districts have been destroyed this year, with plans to utilize these areas for bamboo and essential oil-producing plantations.
The celebration culminated in a tree plantation; programme, symbolizing a collective commitment towards a greener and healthier environment.
