Imphal, June 09 2024:
The Federation of Haomee (FoH) has urged the State Government to start an enquiry against the District Magistrate of Jiribam and security forces over the attack on Meetei villages despite the imposition of curfew in the district.
Notably, the indefinite curfew in Jiribam was imposed on June 7 following the murder of a Meetei civilian on June 6 and the subsequent tension which was simmering in the district.
In a statement, FoH asked how heavily armed Kuki militants were able to torch several Meetei villages effortlessly when assembly of five or more people and carrying of any object including a stick which can be used as a weapon are prohibited.
As per the order issued by Jiribam District Magistrate on June 7, movement of people outside their residences without taking a written approval from the authority is also prohibited in the district.
The Federation asked whether the order was issued only for formality.
FoH understands the pain and grievances of the people in Jiribam, it said and asked all concerned to be wary of the unfolding scenario.
Saying that the security forces should have guarded the vulnerable people in Jiribam instead of relocating them, the Federation added that several houses of Meeteis in Jiribam were torched after they (the occupants) were relocated elsewhere by the security forces.
Further stating that many cases of Kuki militants engaging in violent activities including firings were reported after curfew was imposed in Jiribam, the Federation claimed that the Central forces seem to be not doing what they are supposed to be doing during the curfew period.
The violence in Jiribam could have been averted, the Federation said and asked the State Government to immediately start an enquiry against the Jiribam District Magistrate and security forces.
