Army attacks two insurgent camps along Indo-Myanmar border

Imphal, June 09 2015 : The Indian Army on Tuesday launched an operation along Indo-Myanmar border following the June 4 ambush in Chandel district which had claimed the lives of 18 soldiers, one militant and injured 12 others.

For security reasons, the Army spokesperson who spoke to the media in New Delhi did not disclose the exact location or casualty figures or the modus operandi.

Knowledgeable circles are putting two and two together to make four after taking special consideration of time lapse from June 4 to 9 that the operations might actually have been carried out trans-border.

Because apart from the detachments sent to Arunachal Pradesh and other places, there would not have been any camps there and since a military retaliation was on the cards.

Major General Ranbir Singh, Additional Director General of Military Operations said "You are all aware that following the attack on our security personnel on 04 June 2015 in Chandel, Manipur, we have been on a high alert.

In the course of the last few days, credible and specific intelligence was received about further attacks that were being planned within our territory.

These attacks were to be carried out by some of the groups involved in earlier attacks on our security personnel and their allies" .

He said the army conducted operations to counter these planned assaults.

Early Tuesday morning, the Indian Army engaged two separate groups of insurgents along the Indo- Myanmar border at two locations, along the Nagaland and Manipur borders.

Significant casualties have been inflicted on them, Major General Ranbir claimed.

"As a consequence, threats to our civilian population and security forces were averted.

The army communication with the Myanmar authorities on this matter.

There is a history of close cooperation between our two militaries.

We look forward to working with them to combat such terrorism" he added.

The Major General said that while ensuring peace and tranquility along the border and in the border states, "any threat to our security, safety and national integrity will meet a firm response" .

Scores of insurgents killed, claim reports
Meanwhile, in an offensive against insurgents operating in the Indo-Myanmar border, various reports by the national media said that around 50 insurgents were killed in the operation.

The Army is yet to claim the exact figure of the casualties on the insurgents' side in the "surgical strike" .

The reports said that Mi-17 helicopters of the Air Force were deployed along with Assam Rifles and the Army's Special Forces - 21 Para (SF).

The joint team carried out surgical strikes inside Myanmar where the insurgents had fled to, "entering about 2 km into the neighbouring country, something that was not confirmed by the Army", said a report by NDTV.

"It is not like a kabaddi match where you can come in and go back.

We will cross over and we will hit, we were supported by the Myanmar army," Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore told NDTV.
