Victims of Atomic-bombing remembered

Imphal, August 06, 2012: Remembering all those who were killed or maimed for life in the atom bomb attack at the Japanese city of Hiroshima during Second World War, 67th Hiroshima Day was observed under the aegis of Indo Japan Friendship Association at Manipur Press Club here today.

Speaking on the occasion as Guest of Honour, N Raghumani, Chairperson of Imphal Municipal Council (IMC), said that we need to understand the impact of the atom bomb which was dropped in Hiroshima and try to bring love and peace in the society.

He observed that Manipur was one of the major battle grounds of 2nd World War and Japanese forces came to the state.

As a result, Manipur is regarded as one of the memorial sites by the Japaneses.

Delivering the Presidential address, W Bhumeshwar, President of Indo Japan Friendship Association said that when the atom bomb was first dropped in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, fifty-five thousand people died and another 70,000 people were seriously injured.

Again on August 9, 1945, another atom bomb was dropped in Nagasaki where more than 38,000 people were killed and many others injured.

As a consequence of these two bombing attacks, people of the Japan continue to suffer from various reactions of the atom bomb till today.

Bhumeshwar pointed out that today the world has got more deadly nuclear weapons.

As such, we need to understand the impacts that would be given by a nuclear bomb, which would not only cause harm to human beings but would also give serious impact on the environment of the earth we live in.

As a part of the observance, a painting competition was organized and the winners were rewarded with gifts.

A two minutes silence was also observed as mark of respect to the departed souls and other victims of atomic bombing.The 67th Hiroshima Day was also observed under the aegis of Nihongo Alumni Association at MU Guest House today.

The function was graced by Prof H Tombisana, former VC of MU as Chief Guest.

Dr RK Ranjan, Director of College Development, MU; Dr Khasim Ruivah, former Minister and ex-VC of MU IS Khaidem were Guests of Honour of the function.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof H Tombisana said that we all need to remember the incident of bombing of Hiroshima and pledged that no such incidents be allowed to happen in future.

Prof IS Khaidem pointed out that although various experts and leaders of various nations have stated that atom bomb does no good to the human race, yet the manufacturing of such bombs continue.

As a part of the occasion, an essay competition for students of class IX to XI was conducted on the topic "Hiroshima Day, A Token of Peace in the World".

The first prize was bagged by RK Tirpik of Mega Manipur School, 2nd prize by Supriya Koijam of Mega Manipur School and the 3rd prize by Leivon Livingstone Kom of Johnstone Higher Secondary School.

Floral tributes were also paid at the pond of the garden made by Saiji Makivo, the first Japanese to teach Japan language in MU.
