NIELIT celebrates 37th Foundation Day

National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Imphal celebrated its 37th Foundation Day, along with a Fresher Meet and Teachers' Day, on Wednesday.
The event was graced by Thongam Biswajit Singh, MLA of Thongju Assembly Constituency as the chief guest; Dr Mani Madhukar, Programme Lead, Innovation Centre for Education at IBM, as the guest of honour; and Prof (Dr) Yumnam Jayanta Singh, Executive Director and Dean of NIELIT - as the president.
As per a release issued by NIELIT, the dignitaries visited various research laboratories, including the AI Lab, Drone Lab, and Cyber Security Lab at NIELIT Imphal Centre, taking notes on the ongoing research activities.
The Executive Director emphasized the importance of both the AI Lab and Drone Lab during their visit.
Thokchom Kirankumar, Secretary of IT and Land Resources, and Managing Director of the State Beverage Corporation Ltd, Government of Manipur, and his team also toured the AI and Drone Labs at NIELIT Imphal, expressing appreciation for the institute's initiatives.
Dr Yumnam Jayanta Singh highlighted the diverse courses offered at NIELIT Imphal and its Extension Centres, including M.Tech and PhD programmes.
He emphasized the importance of introducing AI courses for students in grades IX and X to enhance their understanding of the subject, as has been initiated in other States of India.
He also announced plans to establish five new ICT Innovation Hubs aimed at local artisans and women workers to provide digital design skills, increase access to online platforms, and offer ICT-based training, thereby improving livelihoods and connecting them to broader markets.
Dr Mani Madhukar stressed that students should focus on practical, community-oriented projects rather than merely academic ones.
He encouraged them to engage in projects that address real-life challenges in their local ecosystems.
Thongam Biswajit urged students to aspire to become job creators instead of job seekers.
The MLA also emphasized his commitment to advocating for the inclusion of AI and drone technologies in the syllabi for grades VIII, IX, and X .
As part of the celebration, various cultural programmes were also organised.
