Moirang, September 01 2024:
Shortage of teachers and infrastructure has crippled the Thanga Higher Secondary School forcing students to spend several nights in the school in protest.
The Thanga Higher Secondary School was upgraded to Higher Secondary level in 2021 and included in the School Phagathansi Mission of the Government.
However, some subjects do not have a single teacher, said the students.
While a recent transfer of three teachers from the school had sparked the protest, the students have continued with the protest even after the teachers have been sent back.
The students now want the authorities concerned to act promptly and post adequate teachers at the school.
Supporting the protest, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur's Education secretary, Oinam Romesh said the transfer of the three teachers of the school in July had further reduced the number of available teachers and affected the academic atmosphere.
The students had then visited the local MLA and Zonal Education Officer and submitted memoranda urging the authorities concerned to send the teachers back, Romesh said.
As their appeals went unheard, the students then decided to stage a protest and remained at the school from August 27 .
The teachers transferred to other schools have been sent back, but they are yet to join the school, he said.
The school has been included in the School Phagathansi Mission, but it lacks the required infrastructure, he added.
There should be at least 26 teachers for a total of 13 subjects, but there are only 15 teachers at the school, Romesh said.
When each subject should have at least 2 teachers, there are subjects without a single teacher, he added.
The students staging protest at the school said the authorities concerned should avoid transfer and posting of teachers in the middle of the academic session.
This affects classes and hinders the progress of the students, they said.
The students urged the Government and Education Department to send adequate teachers at the school at the earliest.
