Jiribam prepares to face rabies

Jiribam district, so far, has recorded no rabies cases, but all precautionary measures have been taken up to curb the infection, said Jiribam District Hospital officials today.
The district has received anti-rabies vaccines and around 150 anti-venom shots to treat snake bites, said Dr MD Yunush Ali, MD Pathology and store in-charge of CHC/DH Jiribam.
Considering the number of rabies cases recorded in Churachandpur district, the Jiribam District Hospital's Chief Medical Officer has held a meeting with officials of the Veterinary Department.
The meeting at the office of CMO Dr A Sahu was attended by Dr Sudipta DIO/DFWO Jiribam, Dr MD Yunush Ali and Veterinary Department Deputy Director Dr H Usharani Devi and others.
The meeting discussed precautionary measures to be put in place in the district amid a surge in rabies cases in Churachandpur district, said Dr Yunush.
From April 2024 to March 2025, Jiribam recorded 31 cases of dog-bites, 75 cases of cat-bites, and 17 cases of bites by other animals.
However, the district detected no cases of rabies, he said.
Stating that the district has taken up steps to curb any spread of rabies infection, he said, the district hospital has received anti-rabies vaccines and anti-venom shots from the office of the Medical Director.
With the onset of monsoon, Jiribam district may see cases of insect-bites and snakebites.
In case of snakebites, patients may be brought to the district hospital for immediate care and treatment, he added.
