Imphal, August 08 2025:
The Janata Dal United (JDU) State Unit has asked the Government whether instructions given to Deputy Commissioners to form district level task forces and committees to check movement of illegal immigrants have been implemented, and if any foreign National has been detained or deported following the direction.
On July 23, 2025, the Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home), N Ashok Kumar had instructed all Deputy Commissioners to form district level task forces and committees to detect illegal immigrants and record their biometrics.
With a direction to conduct checking at all suspected locations, the office memorandum of the Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) had also instructed the DCs to keep illegal immigrants at secured designated locations for providing shelter and humanitarian support without allowing them to get mixed up or naturalised with local populace.
Speaking to reporters today, JDU State unit vice president Sanjoy Ahanthem said the issue of infiltration of illegal immigrants from across the border must be taken seriously and addressed effectively.
There have been clear and strict instructions given to Deputy Commissioners to check the presence or movement of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar.
However, it is not known whether the instructions have been converted into actions, and if there has been detention of any illegal foreign Nationals, Sanjoy said.
Since the last few weeks, the district administrations have cracked down on illegal encroachers in Imphal and elsewhere with an iron fist, and it is welcomed.
However, the same approach must also be adopted when dealing with illegal immigrants.
All illegal immigrants must be identified and deported like illegal encroachers are being evicted, Sanjoy said.
Sanjoy also opined that census and delimitation exercises in Manipur should be conducted only after all immigrants are detected and identified.
The proposals for conducting census and delimitation before an exercise to identify illegal immigrants is unfortunate.
The Members of the Parliament, representing the State, should table this issue for discussion in the Parliament, Sanjoy said.
