Chandel, August 09 2025:
Locals of Lungleh village have sought the help of Manipur Government to address the sinking foot of a bridge currently being built over Maha River flowing between Lungleh village and Liwa Khullen in Chandel district.
The bridge whose construction began recently was destabilized due to recent heavy rainfall.
Notably, the bridge construction was reportedly funded by the villagers without any Government aid.
According to village chief John Chothe, in the past a bamboo bridge was used to cross the river.
But it was swept away by flood waters two years ago.
Following this, a wooden hanging bridge was constructed after requests to the Deputy Commissioner of Chandel.
Seeking assistance from the Government on behalf of the people, he said that the bridge is one of the limited ways for Lungleh villagers to connect with other areas.
It is used by school students, those seeking medical treatment, as well as men and women alike for any type of work.
To address their common plight, the villagers had been saving money for the last 4/5 years and finally this year they hired local labourers to start construction of a concrete bridge that will bear the load of at least light vehicles.
Unfortunately, heavy rainfall on August 7 and swift current along the Maha River has destabilized one foot of the unfinished bridge.
Years of hardwork and saving on the part of the villagers stands to be ruined now.
In view of such circumstances, the village chief has urged the Government to help stabilize the bridge and complete its construction.
