Imphal, July 30 2024:
The World Meetei Council (WMC) has made a fervent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop the violence going on in Manipur against innocent people who are at the receiving end of the Chin-Kuki attacks.
It is extremely unfortunate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not grant an appointment for a one-on-one meeting with Chief Minister N Biren Singh to apprise him of the situation in Manipur.
This is insulting to the people, specially to the more than 60,000 displaced individuals who have been suffering in relief camps since the violence started on May 3, 2023, the WMC asserted in a statement.
Manipur has been in complete disarray since the migrant Chin-Kuki perpetrators attacked the Meetei public on May 3 last year in Churachandpur and the adjoining areas of Bishnupur district, knowing well that the security of their own Chin-Kuki people living alongside the Meetei in Imphal would be put at risk.
The fact is that the immigrant community has long been looking for an opportune moment to raise their political agenda of a Zale'n-gam.
When they attacked the Meetei public in Churachandpur and the adjoining areas of Bishnupur district atrociously without any reason, they knew that the Meeteis would react.
They did it purposely, declaring that for Zale'n-gam, they are ready to sacrifice even thousands of their own people, it said.
Their leaders are mostly migrants from neighbouring Myanmar.
For instance, ZRO president Thanglianpau Guite, who signed the SoO (Suspension of Operation) with the Government of India was a Member of Myanmar's Parliament who had sneaked into Manipur and became a Scheduled Tribe citizen of India the next day.
This violence has unsettled the social equilibrium of Manipur, victimizing every section of society.
Today, no one is safe in Manipur.
This is the harsh reality, the WMC pointed out.
