World Breastfeeding Week celebrated across Imphal

As observed across the globe, World Breastfeeding Week was celebrated widely in the State from August 1 to 7, 2025 to promote breastfeeding and improve the health of infants and mothers worldwide.
Today, World Breastfeeding Week 2025 was observed at Churachandpur Medical College, Kyamgei, Imphal, organised by the Department of Community Medicine, Churachandpur Medical College.
It was attended by Prof Gangmei Angam, Administrator; Prof Ch Arunkumar Singh, Dean (Academics); Dr Okram Sarda Devi, Sub-Dean (Academics); faculties, staff, FMG interns, ASHAS, Anganwadi Workers, and Village Level Federations.
During the programme, Dr Okram Sarda Devi delivered an insightful talk on the topic "Galactagogues for Breastfeeding Mothers", addressing common challenges in lactation and highlighting safe, effective natural and medicinal interventions to promote optimal breastfeeding.
A quiz competition was also conducted and prizes were distributed to the winners.
The event was successfully conducted under the able leadership of Dr Guddi Laishram, Head (i/c), Department of Community Medicine, with active support from her dedicated team comprising Dr Annie (Assistant Professor), Dr Gaihemlung Panmei (Assistant Professor), Dr Ranabrata (Senior Resident), and staff members Nomita, Surjalata, Esther, Noatomba, and Dhruv and FMG interns.
Moreover, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Imphal East, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal also observed World Breastfeeding Week under the theme, "Prioritize breastfeeding- create sustainable support system" at its conference hall in Andro.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Y Prabhabati Devi, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK, Imphal East District highlighted the importance of breastfeeding for both infants and mothers.
She also emphasized the health benefits, nutritional value, and emotional bonding that breastfeeding fosters to the newborn infants.
"Breastfeeding is one of the most powerfill .ways to give babies a healthy start in life, which provides all the nutrients a baby needs in the first six months and continues to support their growth even after solid foods are introduced.
Breast milk is not just food it's a complete source of protection, comfort, and connection", she added.
Dr Y Prabhabati also asserted that for mothers, breastfeeding supports faster recovery after childbirth and lowers the risk of serious health problems like breast cancer.
An interaction programme was also held with the participation of ICDS supervisor, 30 Anganwadi workers and helpers.
Similarly, World Breastfeeding Week 2025 was also celebrated today by Home Science Association, Manipur in collaboration with Wangkhei High School, Wangkhei Keithel Ashangbi.
The observance was attended by Home Science Association Manipur's president H Anuradha, secretary K Shulochana Devi and teachers of Wangkhei High School.
During the event, Dr Sumati Rajkumari, Assistant Professor, Department of Home Science, GP Women's College gave a presentation on the topic, "Prioritizing Breastfeeding" .
