Kuki villages alleges Konsakhul of disregarding of Govt orders

Kangpokpi, April 05 2025: Tension flared up in Kangpokpi district's Kangchup Geljang region on Saturday as a long-standing land dispute in the Gulpi Tuitin area escalated into a physical confrontation, leaving two members of the Konsakhul village authority with minor injuries.

Meanwhile, chiefs of L Phaijang and L Tangnuam condemned Konsakhul's actions as a disregard of government orders.

The incident occurred around 1:00 pm after villagers from Konsakhul reportedly resumed land demarcation activities using heavy machinery in defiance of a public curfew imposed by the Kangpokpi district magistrate.

The disputed land lies between Leilon Vaiphei and Kharam Vaiphei and falls under the jurisdiction of L Phaijang and L Tangnuam (Haraothel) - both gazetted villages within the Kangchup-Geljang sub-division.

The area has historically been jointly cultivated by the two Vaiphei villages and was officially demarcated as such by SDO orders issued in 1999 and 2002.In light of rising tensions and based on alarming reports from police and civil officials, district magistrate Mahesh Chaudhari had imposed a curfew from 5 pm on April 2 under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.The curfew restricted all public movement and bans construction activities in Konsakhul, Haraothel, and L Phaijang.

Despite the standing orders, Konsakhul villagers resumed activity at the disputed site.

Eyewitnesses said when locals from L Phaijang and L Tangnuam approached to intervene, a scuffle broke out, during which the chief and chairman of Konsakhul were injured.

In a joint statement issued later in the day, the chiefs of L Phaijang and L Tangnuam condemned Konsakhul's actions as a "blatant breach of government authority".

They reaffirmed their right to protect what they described as ancestral land and warned of serious consequences if provocations continued, holding the administration responsible for any further unrest.
