Imphal, July 30 2024:
Expressing remorse over the incident which took place at Ocean Lounge, Khuman Lampak in the night of July 26 where a Tangkhul woman was manhandled and assaulted, the Pambei-led UNLF has announced that disciplinary action would be initiated against the four of its cadres who were involved in the incident.
The outfit has taken serious note of the incident as it defied the party's principle of giving highest respect to all women.
Thounaojam Gopen, Naorem Ningthouremba, Arambam Tom and Laishram Doshnikumar who were involved in the incident are local sympathisers and untrained members of the party.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, the party carried out an enquiry.
The four members were coming out of Ocean Lounge after drinking liquor.
As the woman passed by them on their way out, one of them took hold of the woman's hand and misbehaved with her, said a press release issued by the outfit's media coordinator Charairongba Thokchom.
The woman called some of her friends to help her.
As the four members stepped out of Ocean Lounge, they saw seven men standing in front of the lounge.
Soon the four members and the seven men were caught in a heated argument and they exchanged blows.
All 11 of them sustained injuries in the brawl.
While some of them sustained grievous injuries, others sustained minor injuries, it said.
Acknowledging that the ugly incident resulted from drinking liquor and violation of the party's principle by the four members, the Pambei-led UNLF assured that the four members would be awarded befitting punishment as per the party's constitution.
It is also a matter of grave concern that Ocean Lounge was serving liquor to customers illegally right in the heart of Imphal city, the outfit said.
Saying that the outfit has taken note of how the particular incident hurt the sentiment of Naga people, it clarified that the incident should not be construed as targeting any particular community.
The outfit added that it would work to avoid such incidents in the future.
