Imphal, September 10 2015 :
Reacting to Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam's statement "no one including the UNC supported or opposed the three Bills before they were passed", as reported in some local dailies today, the United Naga Council (UNC) has clarified that the UNC has nothing to do with the Government of Manipur and any Act or Bill passed by its Assembly is not/will not be binding upon the Naga people and their land.
According to a press release by UNC general secretary S Milan, since Nagas had declared severance of political ties with the Government of Manipur thereby demanded Alternative Arrangement outside the Government of Manipur pending Indo-Naga political settlement by the 3rd Naga Peoples' Convention (NPC) held on 1st July 2010, there has been no correspondence between the UNC and the Government of Manipur.
Nonetheless, on Jul 29, 2015, UNC had submitted a representation to Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi informing him that "no issues or demands raised by other community(s) living in the present State of Manipur affecting or tending to affect the Naga position on land, identity, history, culture, time honored institutions and political aspirations will be tolerated under any circumstances and urged the Government of India to expedite the Indo-Naga peace process with political will to its logical conclusion for lasting peace in the region.
"We will neither compromise nor negotiate with our adversary that is going to affect the established position of the Nagas and also decided to struggle collectively till we achieve our long cherished political aspiration", it added.
