Imphal, August 17 2011:
In amidst of the ongoing general strike of the SHDDC in demand of a full-fledged Sadar Hills district, 348 freight trucks and ten passenger buses arrived Imphal today afternoon from Jiribam along the NH 37 under heavy security escort of MR, IRB, CDOs and ROP of CRPF and Assam Rifles.
The freight trucks which arrived here today included 45 oil tankers, besides several FCI-goods laden trucks that brought essential commodities from Jiribam.
The vehicles were left stranded at Awang Khul due to the ongoing general strike.
Unfortunately, strike supporters rolled down a huge boulder from a hilltop near Sinam area when the vehicles slowed down due to bad road condition and damaged a convoy vehicle of Thoubal police commandos.
Fortunately no human casualty was reported.
Commando personnel fired rounds of blank fire to disperse the strike supporters preventing further casualties.
A team of Transport and Drivers' Council led by Hijam Ranjit and President United Club National Highway 37 Thongam Shyama rushed to the spot and repaired the sunken road with the help of cranks and dodgers to give the vehicles safe passage.
However, seven freight trucks are left stranded along the highway as the trucks developed some technical faults.
