Consultation on 'Climate & environment changes in Manipur' conducted

The Centre for Research and Advocacy, Manipur (CRAM) and United Voluntary Youth Council (UVYC) jointly organised a consultation on "Climate and Environment Changes in Manipur" at Youth Hostel, Khuman Lampak.

As per a release issued by CRAM, the consultation discussed the pattern and impacts of climate and environment changes in Manipur and the role of indigenous peoples to address the climate change impacts.
During the programme, Dr Tourangbam Brajakumar, Director, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change.
Manipur gave a presentation on the topic, "Pattern and Impacts of Climate and Environment Changes in Manipur".
Dr Brajakumar shared that Manipur witnessed increased climate change, unpredictable rainfall and weather patterns.
He asserted that the temperature and intensity of rainfall has increased in Manipur, which has affected the agriculture, health and socio-economic condition of the people.
He also emphasized the importance of prioritizing climate and environment change in Manipur and to strengthen the research, policy formulation, implementation and communication on climate change mitigation and adaptation measures, with strong participation of communities, academia and the media.
Jiten Yumnam, secretary, CRAM expressed concern over the alarming impact of climate change on agriculture, due to increased drought, flooding, pest infestation, disaster, etc which have undermined food sovereignty and suffering of indigenous peoples of Manipur.
Nomita Takhenchangbam, environmentalist, opined that development processes in Manipur need to comply with environment & development standards and detailed impact assessment, including climate impacts should be conducted with a clear accountability mechanism.
The gathering resolved to recommend the Government of India to recognize the urgency of combating the climate crisis in Manipur, such as disaster, rising temperature, diseases, etc and to strengthen the focus on climate induced disaster response and frame policy for disaster management in Manipur.
Recognize the role of Indigenous peoples, organisations and human rights defenders in advancing just climate solutions, adaptation and resilience in Manipur.
The gathering also recommended the Government to conduct detailed impact assessment and to review the pursuance of unsustainable development projects detrimental to environment, climate and survival of indigenous peoples.
The gathering further pointed out that International Financial Institutions and corporates should stop financing unsustainable projects.
