Imphal, June 26 2012: As there is little back-up power for the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed at different strategic points of Imphal city as and when there is power supply break up, the same CCTV cameras would be fitted with solar panels.

On the other hand, even after providing dedicated power supply in place of solar panels, the traffic lighting system installed at different junctions of Imphal city remain non-operational till date due to technical defects.

Dedicated power supply was provided for the traffic lighting system as the solar panels could not generate sufficient power to operate the system.

A reliable source informed that the batteries fitted in the CCTV cameras could not give enough back up power to operate the cameras when there is power failure.

To amend this drawback, the CCTV cameras would be fitted with solar panels for charging the batteries.

Incidentally, batteries fitted inside the CCTV cameras installed at Nagamapal and Khuman Lampak were stolen by some miscreants a few days back.

Had the CCTV cameras been operational, none would have been able steal the batteries.

Nevertheless, police have registered cases in connection with the battery theft and they are hunting for the miscreants, conveyed the source.

Even though the traffic lighting system installed earlier at different busy junctions of Imphal city are not working, the same system is being installed at three new junctions.

The three new junctions are Kangla Western Gate, Singjamei and Kwakeithel.

As for the traffic lighting system installed in front of LIC office, most of its components have been damaged after it was rammed by a vehicle.

Repairing work is going on, informed the source.

Likewise, efforts are on to repair all other non-functional systems.

After the system is installed at the three new junctions, the whole network of traffic lighting system would be made operational at one time.

Contrary to the earlier expectation that the traffic lighting system could be operated with solar power, solar power could not operate the system.

After the failure of solar panels, dedicated power supply was provided for the system.

But even after providing dedicated power supply, the same system remains non-functional.
