Imphal, June 26 2012:
The Mate Tribes Union (MTU) has strongly condemned the alleged undue interference of Mate Council Union over the proposed function to be organised by it in connection with recognition of Mate Tribe in the Schedule Tribe list of India.
Urging the state government to look into the matter, MTU has also threatened to launch intense agitations including bandhs and blockades if the government fails to do so.
Talking to media persons in this regard at Manipur Press Club here today, KS Mate, President of MTU pointed out that MTU is the apex body of the Mate tribes settling both in Myanmar and India.
However, while MTU is preparing to organize a grand function in connection with recognition of the tribe in the list of Schedule tribes of India at its General Head Quarters, the Mate Council Union has filed a civil suit in the Court and accordingly the Court has passed an interim order in favour of Mate Tribe Council.
He asserted that Mate Tribe Council is just like an NGO run by a single family.
The office bearers of the council are appointed from amongst the family members of one LD Mate who is the Commissioner of Income Tax Department.
There has also been an instance where LD Mate threatened the members of MTU.
The state government should bring out ways and means to enable the MTU to organize the function and the registration of Mate Tribe Council should be cancelled.
Necessary actions also should be taken up against LD Mate.
If the demands are not taken up within a week's time, the MTU would be compelled to launch intense agitations in the hill districts of the state, KS Mate warned.
