Imphal, June 26 2012:
Following the incessant rainfall during the last two/three days, water levels at many rivers criss-crossing through the State are rising steadily while many streets and lanes of Imphal and greater Imphal areas have been flooded.
Yet, officials manning IFCD's flood control room maintained that as of now there is no imminent threat of any major flood.
In the past 24 hours, water levels of Imphal river, Iril river and Nambul river have risen to 786.400 metres, 782.425 metres and 781.550 metres respectively.
Notably, warning level for Imphal river is 785.900 metres and flood stage level is 786.900.The highest flood stage level is 788.400 metres.
Given this situation, where flood may occur in case there is more rainfall in the next couple of days, IFCD has started procuring flood control materials like sand bags, bamboo, bamboo-mats etc.
However, there is no exigency fund for flood.
The department is procuring control materials from funds meant for other purposes.

Meanwhile, Wangoi AC MLA Oinam Lukhoi today conducted a field survey of the vulnerable river banks within his constituency.
On the other hand, many lanes and by-lanes of Imphal which have been deprived of proper drainage system due to encroachment by private parties are facing artificial flood.
Together with IFCD Executive Engineer Ch Ranbir and other officials, MLA Lukhoi inspected Imphal river bank at Oinam, Khaidem, Iram Siphai and Laiphrakpham and Truklaobi.
Taking due note of the dug out portions beside the retaining wall constructed under PMGSY at Truklaobi, the MLA instructed officials concerned to fill in the dug out portions at the earliest.
He also assured that retaining walls would be constructed along vulnerable portions of the river bank in consultation with the Minister concerned.
The MLA and his team then inspected the ongoing earth filling work being executed along Nambul river bank between Top Upokpi bridge and Naoshekpi culvert.
On the other hand, many localities of Sagolband and Keishamthong Assembly Constituencies are facing a flood-like situation due to clogged drainage systems which have been severely constricted on account of encroachment.
In spite of all the efforts put in since the last few years to clear and develop Waishel Maril which is the main canal to drain out water from Sagolband and Keishamthong Assembly segments, the same canal is still not fit enough to drain out the huge volumes of water falling into it during rainy season.
In the meantime, taking due notice of the steadily rising water levels of rivers draining the State, the State Govt has opened flood control rooms and officials have been put on alert.
Telephone number for the flood control room is 0385-2451550, conveyed a source.
