Imphal, May 22 2012:
Contending that various reminders to the Government of Manipur for sufficient supply of power has failed to yield the desire result, All Heirok Electricity Consumers' Welfare Union has threatened to launch intense agitation in case the situation do not improve at the earliest.
Conveying woes of the Heirok public to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, Union co-convenor Mandir Laishram said a memorandum handed over to the Chief Minister on April 30 highlighted severe inconveniences faced by the Heirok people due to non provision of sufficient power supply since long time back.
While power supply had been erratic electricity department personnel arrive on a regular basis for collecting power bills, Mandir said while pointing out that there is need for streamlining the power supply mechanism.
Deploring alleged lack of initiative from the CM's side to ensure sufficient supply of electricity, he contended that the power department had been levying Rs 410 each as the power bill for a 30-day period, failing which two percent compound interest is added to the due amount.
Contrary to non provision of power for nearly 26 days in a month, levying the monthly bill is not only outrageous but unjustifiable, he said and proposed that power tax should be levied at the amount of power supplied or consumed by the consumers.
Further demanding that the Wangjing subcentre, which provides power to Heirok area, should be upgraded in sync with the growing number of consumers, the Union co-convenor also proposed that a permanent complaint room, exclusively for Heirok consumers, be opened at the sub-station to redress the problem.
