Imphal, May 17 2012:
The Kuki State Demand Committee (KSDC) has stated that its scheduled economic blockade has been put off after taking due note of the appeals made by several civil society organisations towards this end.
Briefing media persons at Vengnuom community hall, Lamka this afternoon, KSDC general secretary Hejang Haokip the economic blockade which was supposed to begin from 6 pm of May 19 has been put off for sometime in view of the appeals made by several civil society organisations as well as the woes likely to be faced by the public.
Together with putting off the blockade, the decision to picket Government offices has also been revoked.
Nevertheless, KSDC would not give up without doing anything.
It would certainly spearhead some sorts of agitation, Hejang Haokip said.
On being asked about the modes of agitation, Hejang said that the modes of agitation, its schedule and place have not been finalised.
He said that the committee would work out all the details.
Even as a memorandum highlighting the demand for a separate Kuki State was submitted to the Prime Minister before the just concluded general strike, there has been no response till date.
Last year too, a 24 hours general strike was imposed in the State with effect from July 22 midnight in pursuit of the same demand.
On October 30, mass rallies were taken out at Chandel, Churachandpur and Sadar Hills, Hejang recalled.
Although Kukis have their own history of being an independent people, they opted to remain loyal citizens of India.
"However, India is yet to recognise out loyalty.
Deliberate refusal of New Delhi to recognise our loyalty gave birth to the idea of a separate Kuki State", Hejang Haokip said.
He also conveyed gratitude to all the people who supported and made the just concluded 72 hours general strike a success.
