Speaking at the occasion Dr K Shantibala said the theme for this year's World Suicide Prevention Day observation is 'Connect, communicate, care' .
Suicide is not a pleasant thing.
Awareness must be provided to prevent suicide, she said.
Emotional experiences, recent life trauma, depression, and frustrations among teenagers are some of the major reasons for suicide.
According to the WHO report, over 1 million people commit suicide every year.
Death by suicide far exceeds the number of deaths in a war, she stated.
If any signs for suicide are noted, family members and next of kin must intervene and help the person suffering from suicidal ideation by providing timely counsel.
About 90 percent of suicides are attributed to mental disorder.
The remaining 10 percent are consequences of underlying psychiatric difficulties like depression, addiction and frustration.
Suicide does not solve anything, she stated while urging all to have confidence to face life problems.
RK Nayansana Devi also spoke on the occasion.
