Imphal, September 10 2016:
A day after media reported Congress MLA Y Erabot's possibility of joining the BJP, former Speaker Haobam Borbabu has said that he is still optimistic to get the BJP ticket in Wangkhei AC for the upcoming State Assembly election.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a booth level committee meeting held at his Khurai Ahongei residence, Borbabu said that there are certain criteria for joining the saffron party.
He said that anybody who joins BJP must not be senile and free from criminal cases.
As per the constitution of BJP, the party does not admit members of other political parties easily, Borbabu said and added that Central leaders and the State Election Management Committee would decide on party tickets.
The former Speaker further said that he would respect and accept any decision of the senior leaders of the party.
He said, "I don't like to criticise or give adverse comments on media reports about Erabot's possible entry into BJP fold." He said that BJP has gained remarkable progress in the State in the past few months.
Formation of BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre, recent success in Assam polls and positive progress in the poll-bound States have given lots of popularity to BJP in the State as well.
The party began from the scratch in the State and now it has gained remarkable progress within a short period of time, he said and added that everybody is welcome to the party.
However, the party also has its own ideology and the new entrants must fulfil the criteria enshrined in the party Constitution, he observed.
Saying that there are many ticket aspirants in the party, Borbabu said that the final decision in this regard would be taken by Central leaders, State Election Management Committee and party core committee.
He said that although there are other political parties, the upcoming State Assembly election is most likely to witness a major tussle between ruling Congress and BJP.
He expressed hope that good governance would be restored and corruption rooted out once BJP forms Government in the State.
He said that party president Amit Shah would address a convention of party workers coming from over 2700 booths of both hill and valley at Hapta Kangjeibung on September 14.Ahead of the said convention, the booth level committee meeting of 50 booths of Khurai AC was organised at Khurai Ahongei.
