Nanao an illustrated Manipuri children's book edited by B Jayantakumar Sharma from children's lore, game songs and lullabies of Manipur's oral tradition has registered a record sale of more than 900 copies since its release on December 1 last year.
Initiated, published and marketed by NE Brothers Entertainments Pvt Ltd, Nanao had only 1000 copies in its first edition.
The book, which is well illustrated with large colour pencil sketches showing some of the disappearing indigenous children's games of Manipur contains children game songs and lullabies like Uraobi, Seboti Kaonaba, Nungsit Pobi, Uchichi Chi and Khubak Lan.
The book comes with an audio CD containing the games songs which are in the book.
The songs are sung by noted folk singer Lourembam Bedabati and seven child artistes.
Northeast Brothers Entertainments Private Ltd director Nelson Elangbam said that Nanao aims at pre-school level children to foster the traditional children games which are presently disappearing due to globalization.
After this book, the publisher is in the process of bringing out similar books for various ethnic communities of the North East region in their respective dialects.
He said, "When my son was one and half years old, we used to download nursery rhymes from the internet and let him listen to only English rhymes due to non availability of our Manipuri rhymes.
Thus one day, I tried to sing Tha tha Thabungton for him and I was unable to complete the song as we have come to far from all these songs and made a reason to forget it.
So I started dreaming to bring out books of Meitei rhymes for the new generation and make it available in the market" .
