Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) conducted a one-day awareness programme for IMC councillors and ward committee members regarding implementation of urban self employment programmes under the Swarna Jayenti Shahari Rojgar Yojana (SJSRY) .
The awareness programme held at GM Hall today was attended by Commissioner (Mahud) S sunderlal, Deputy Secretary (Muda), W Bhaktaraj, Director (Mahud) N Gitkumar, IMC Executive Member W Rajen, IMC chairperson A Nimai and the council's vice chairperson Thambaljao Phaomei as members on the dais.
According to N Gitkumar, Government of India-sponsored SJSRY was launched in the State in 1997 but its implementation remained elusive owing to certain complications.
With the problem not an issue anymore the said scheme would be simultaneously relaunched and implemented in all the 27 IMC wards before March 30, this year, said the Mahud Director who expressed confidence that today's awareness programme would facilitate the councillors and ward committee members effectively implement the project.
Under the project individuals in all the wards belonging to families below poverty line (BPL) would be provided loans to either launch or sustain income generation activities such as setting up grocery shops, computer/mobile phone repairing, beauty parlour, handloom/embroidery etc.
Each of the councillors or ward committee members will select about 30 beneficiaries in each ward with the selected individuals supposed to deposit Rs 2000 each to Manipur Urban Development Agency, explained the Director adding that Rs 8000 loan amount would be provided by the authorised bank as first phase payment.
Further informing that the initial loan amount has to be repaid within a year in order to be eligible for receiving second phase amount of Rs 10,000, he said that the loan benefit would continue for a three year period.
Gitkumar also emphasised on the need for the councillors and ward committee members to ensure transparency and genuineness in selecting the beneficiaries so that the project serve the purpose.
