Imphal, August 31:
Controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen today lent support to a protest by students here against the custodial killing of a Manipuri woman by security personnel saying the incident was a shame for any civilised society.
Nasreen, who arrived in the city a few days back to celebrate her 42nd birthday, went to the venue of a hunger strike staged by the students wing of the CPI(M)(L) here and shared her thoughts with the agitators on the issue.
"Please dont portray me as one of the protestors.
That would create visa problems for me as I am not supposed to be part of any agitation.
I am here just to express my solidarity with the issue," she told photographers as they were about to take her photo with the students.
CPIM(L) students wing sources said the writer told them that she felt a deep sense of pain over incidents "that curb the basic democratic right of any human being".
The exiled writer had also expressed her remorse over reports of misutilisation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and supported the demand for repeal of the Act from the North East, the students wing said.
Nasreen is facing a fatwa from fundamentalist groups in Bangladesh for her writings, branded as anti-Islamic by such groups.
