Police commandos of the Imphal West Dist shot dead an ailing youth after dragging him out from his bed at Khongsai Veng three Kms east of Lamphel PS this afternoon at around 2.30, said sources.
The victim has been identified as one Jamkholien Chongloi alias Yangmilien (28) of Saikul Purum Likli and staying at Khongsai Veng.
Sources said that a team of Imphal West Police commandos came to the victim's residence at Khongsai Veng at around 2.30 pm asking for Jamkholien.
After forcing the family members out of the house, the police commandoes barged into the house and dragged Jamkholien out who was sleeping in his bed.
After dragging him to the courtyard, a man in civvies who had come along with the commandos asked Jamkholien whether he knew a person by the name of Lalboi in front of Jamkholien's sister Lingneilem alias Lanu Chongloi (30) and Jamkholien's brother-in-law Tongkholam who were also standing nearby Jamkholien answered that he knew no one by the name of Lalboi.
Infuriated at the reply of Jamkholien, the man in civvies flashed out a gun and shot him point blank without saying a word.
The victim received bullet wounds near the right ear and on the stomach.
On hearing the gunshot the other personnel who were standing near the gate of the victim also began firing indiscriminately shouting that Lalboi had escaped from the area, added the source.
Talking to media persons, Tongkholam who was standing near Jamkholien, when he was shot said that he saw no one escaping from the area after the police shot Jamkholien.
The commando team also took away a motor bike (Pulsar 150 cc MN 06S/4963) belonging to the victim's elder brother identified as Seipahi Chongloi.
Sources also said that family members and locals of Khongsai Veng have strongly refuted the the police commandos claim that one hand genade and some empty cases were recovered from the victim.
The charges are baseless and unfounded and done to cover up their heinous act, added the locals.
Mention may be made here that the victim was undergoing medical treatment at his residence after being hospitalised at Imphal Hospital on August 25.Village Authority Khongsai Veng and Khongsai Veng Meira paibi while strongly condemning the brutal killing of Jamkholien has termed the killing as insane and barbaric.
Meanwhile, KRA Information and Publicity Secretary DT Haokip has clarified that the deceased Jamkholien was an innocent civilian and was not in any way connected with the KRA.
He also threatened to retaliate against all the police personnel involved in the brutal killing of Jamkholien.
The victim's body has been deposited at RIMS morgue.
However the Superintendent of Police Imphal West said that an activist of the proscribed outfit KRA was gunned down and another arrested during an encounter with CDO Imphal West Dist this afternoon at around 2.45 at Khongsai Veng.
The victim has been identified as one Jangkolen Chongloi (27) s/o Helkholen Chongloi of Purum Likli presently residing at Khongsai Veng while the arrested youth has been identified as Khup Neireng Kom alias Areng Kom (24) s/o S Toton Kom of Purum Likli.
One HE grenade with some incriminating documents of KRA were recovered from the KRA cadres.
SP further informed that CDO Imphal West Dist also arrested two KYKL cadres during search operations conducted at Lamphel Sanakeithel this evening at around 5.30.The arrested cadres have been identified as Mandengbam Rajkumar alias Rajesh (23) s/o M Indramani of Iroisemba Mang Hiden presently residing at Lamphel Sanakeithel and Wahengbam Orjit Singh (26) s/o W Noida Singh of Patsoi part-II.
According to a press statement issued by SP Imphal East today, a UNLF cadre was arrested by personnel of Imphal East police during a search operation conducted at Urup Arapti this morning at around 11 am.
The youth has been identified as one Wangkheimayum Inaobi Singh alias Kokngamba (28) s/o (L) W Bihari Singh of Kongba Nandeibam Leikai.
During preliminary interrogation he revealed that he had joined UNLF in Dec 1997 through one Kokchabi of Heirangoithong.
He received training at Burma under the 14 th batch of UNLF.
Another team of the Imphal East dist police arrested a PULF member identified as one Md Kadir (47) s/o Md Manigul of Urup Leitan Makhong from his own residence this morning at around 11.45.According to a statement issued by the Imphal East SP, the arrest was made during search operations conducted at Keirao, Urup Arapti etc to nab some PUL Fcadres who had lobbed a bomb at the residence of Md Nahtomba of Keirao Mayai Leikai this morning.
