Jiri College Students' Union has threatened to start various form of agitation if the State Government fail to reciprocate positively to the demand for conversion of Jiri College into a full fledged Government College within February 25, informed representatives of the students' union and Manipur Students Federation (MSF) Jiribam branch .
Speaking to media persons at the MSF head office this afternoon, Jiri College Student Union general secretary Y Budha informed that the college besides having the requisite educational infrastructure is also imparting education to a large number of students from neighbouring districts of Tamenglong and Churachandpur, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj areas of Assam and therefore there is no reason why the Govt should delay converting the College into a full fledged Govt college.
He further informed that officials of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, Dept of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Govt of India had also given the green signal for converting the college to the Secretary of the State Higher Education Department.
Lamenting that repeated appeals to the State Govt for converting the college into a full fledged Govt college have all fallen on deaf ears, Budha said that a memorandum containing a charter of demand regarding the college was submitted to the Chief Minister on Feb 8.Some of the important demands included in the memo are Conversion of the Jiri College into a full fledged college, filling up of the vacant principal's post, opening of arts and science stream in the college among others.
He also warned of launching an agitation from Feb 26 if the State Govt fail to meet the demand of the union.
