One dies of suspected Rabies : CCpur rolls up sleeves

With signs of Rabies in the air once again, the district medical authorities assisted by the State level National Rabies Control Programme team has opened anti-rabies or dog-bite cell at the District Hospital Churachandpur today in an effort to tackle any outbreak that was witnessed in the past.
The exercise was reportedly set into motion after a 40 year-old-man from Rengkai Bible Hills in Churachandpur with signs and symptoms of Rabies succumbed at RIMS, Imphal on July 1.Thangminpau Samte, 40 was reportedly bitten by a pup belonging to his neighbour sometime in May first week.
Sources said he had only sought medical attention sometime in June after feeling some kind of pain in his arm.
As the medical treatment he took failed to relieve the pain, he again sought an appointment with a doctor on June 30 wherein he was advised to get admitted at RIMS and administered the anti-rabies vaccine.
As Samte had already shown symptoms of rabies including hydrophobia (fear of water) by then, he eventually succumbed on July 1 atabout9.30am, despite the best efforts to save him.
With the signs of Rabies rearing its ugly head, Deputy Commissioner Shyam Lal Poonia yesterday issued a circular instructing all dog owners to register and get their dogs vaccinated.
Concurrently the local authorities also commenced a 3-day special anti-rabies vaccination drive at three different locations beginning today.
Meanwhile, a 7-member State level NRCP team have been deputed by the Medical Directorate today to impart necessary training to the medical staff of District Hospital Churachandpur.
The team led by Dr Kh Sasheekumar Mangang, Additional Director (Public Health) have also set-up a dedicated dog-bite cell at the hospital's casualty department.
The other members are, State Surveillance Officer IDSP Dr L Gojendra Singh; State Epidemiologist IDSP Dr Bharati Meitram; State Date Manager IDSP Antony Haorakcham; State Microbiologist IDSP H Shyamkishore Singh; Veterinary Consultant IDSP Dr Prem Chongtham; and State Entomologist IDSP Anuradhan Sagolsem.
Notably, there were 10 reported cases of dog-bite at the hospital yesterday while the figure for today, at 2.30pm was three.
