Imphal, August 23 2021:
A combined team of Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) and Singjamei police foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs meant for treating Covid positive patients to Myanmar yesterday.
The drugs were reportedly carried by three persons- Mohammad Feroz Khan (30) s/o Md Heffajuddin; Imran Khan (22) s/o (L) Abbdullah both from Moreh Ward no 5 Muslim Nagar Mayai Leikai and Subhamkumar Anand (23) s/o Rabindra Prasad Gupta of Kathiar Pratap Ganj, Bihar, currently staying at BT Road Roopmahal Tank.
The 'smugglers' who were arrested by the combined team from Canchipur near Heijingang Supermarket yesterday, were produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West by Singjamei Police along with a prayer for 5 days police remand, today.
The IO of the case submitted that the arrested individuals were coming from Imphal side toward Moreh in a Maruti van bearing Assam registration number in a very suspicious manner.
On checking, two carton boxes containing 48 packets written as DESREM Rx Remdesivir for injection 100 mg/vial, Lyophilized powder for injection and 100 bottles written as SII ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 Corona Virus Vaccine (Recombinant) Covishield were seized from the van, the IO said and added that they were trying to transport the seized items to Myanmar through Moreh.
As they could not produce any valid documents, the police team seized the medicines and arrested them on spot.
On further questioning, the arrested persons disclosed that the seized items were handed to them by one Subhamkumar Anand staying at BT Road Roopmahal Tank for delivery to Gutu of Moreh.
Maintaining that Subhamkumar Anand has also been arrested by the police team, the IO said that the seized items were brought from Delhi on air under the directive of Gutu.
The Directorate of Health Services has been requested to verify the seized medicines, the IO said.
The IO then prayed to remand the arrested individuals to police custody to trace Gutu of Moreh.
The Court on perusal of the case record and after hearing the submission of the IO remanded the accused to 5 days police remand till August 27 .
