Imphal, October 08 2018:
Braving the ongoing protest at Manipur University, a large number of students turned up at the varsity today to submit their entrance examination forms on the last day of form submission.
The heavy rush on the last day can be understood in the backdrop of the fact that many departments in MU could not receive the application forms earlier due to the stand off at the varsity.
To deal with the heavy rush, five counters were opened inside A Block with students standing in serpentine queues.
Even as many turned up to submit their application forms, a large number of MU students under MUSU thronged the university campus carrying on their agitation against Pro VC Prof K Yugindro and attempted to storm the A Block.
The large number of policemen deployed at the university managed to control the agitating students and drive them out.
General secretary of MUSU, Laishram Kenedy said that the appointment of K Yugindro as the Pro VC by AP Pandey from his temporary office at Sanjenthong is illegitimate and hence his continuance in office as the Pro VC cannot be recognised.
Speaking further, the student leader said, "We do not recognise K Yugindro as the Pro VC of the university as his appointment is illegal.
The Y category security status that he sought should also be turned down." On the other hand, students of Economics Department and Computer Science Department staged sit-in protest at the entrance gate of their departments today.
Condemning the midnight raid of MU by security personnel on September 20 and demanding the release of the arrested teachers and students without any conditions and revocation of the FIR filed against them, the students said that they cannot remain silent when their teachers and colleagues have been arrested on trumped up charges.
MUTA to take mass casual leave: The Manipur University Teachers' Association (MUTA) has resolved to extend non-cooperation to Prof K Yugindro and his functioning for using un-parliamentary barbaric terms like "terrorist like agitators", "terrorised act" and "accused criminal of MU" in his letter to the Secretary, Department of Higher Education, MHRD.
An emergency executive committee meeting of MUTA was held today with its president Prof I Tomba in the chair.
The meeting also resolved to take mass casual leave on October 10 in protest against the delay in unconditional release and withdrawal of FIR lodged against the teachers, staff and students of the university.
Another resolution says that steps for rescheduling the pending examinations and admission processes for 2018-19 would be put on hold until normalcy returns in the university.
