Ukhrul, September 23:
The perpetual dark nights for the denizens of Ukhrul district might soon become a thing of the past with the State Government is able to effectively implement the Central Government-sponsored Bharat Nirman National Rural Electrification Policy.
The Policy envisages setting up one 33/11 KV Power Sub-Station at each block with the objective of electrifying 1,12,000 villages covering over 2.3 crores households.
Till the materialisation of the policy, the denizens of the district have to bear with the problem of irregular/ shortage of power supply which have become a part of their normal life.
EE Electricity Department, Ukhrul, Joykumar Sharma categorically said that until and unless augmented power supply scheme is implemented by the State Authority, extension of electricity to the adjoining villages of Ukhrul is not possible.
However, he expressed optimism that once the 33/11 KV Power Sub-Station at Namrei, being constructed under the Rural Electrification programme is commissioned, the areas under Chingai block would automatically get electric supply.
The foundation stone of the Namrei Power Station located under Chingai Block was laid by the Chief Minister on May this year and arrangements are also being made for installing a similar 33/11 KV power station at Kasom Khullen and Phungyar in the near future.
Highlighting on the problems being faced by the Department in ensuring regular power supply, the officer mentioned failure of the consumers to clear their outstanding bill in time despite the fact that the State Government has to procure power from outside the State.
Nonetheless, the revenue collection in respect of Ukhrul district last year was comparative better in comparison to other district, he said, adding that a total of 1.4 crores had been collected which is more than 80 percent of the total targeted revenue collection.
Meanwhile, the denizens of Greenland and Alungtang localities of Ukhrul town have started contributing money and manpower for repairing the local transformer which has remained fused for the last 4 months.
