Imphal, January 29:
Manipur University at Canchipur though considered as one of the prestigious and higher seat of learning not only in Manipur but also in the entire North East region, is in a pathetic condition with gross lack of infrastructural facilities staring out from every nook and cranny.
Established in 1980 by an Act of the State Legislature, Manipur University would be completing 25 years of its existence by 2005, and talks of celebrating its silver jubilee is already in the air, but many of its buildings are crumbling downs.
Thanks to Govt's apathy, cracks have appeared in many of the buildings including the newly constructed ones like the University Health Centre.
The works of the Centre have been cracked at many points and the roof started leaking.
There is no sign of any maintenance of its sprawling campus with grasses growing upto the knee and the roads within filled with dust and concrete.
No fencing have also been put up around the campus giving the impression of wasteland or at the best a grazing ground for the stray cattle from the nearby villages.
Talking to The Sangai Ex-press, the Registrar of the University Dr RK Ranjan said that the institution has not received any grant from the side of the Govt since its inception.
He informed that the construction of the buildings of the University have been taken up by the Deptt of Public Works, Government of Manipur and the National Building Construction Corporation.
Some of the buildings have though are as old as ten to fifteen years, he hastened to add.
On the failure to maintain a strict academic calendar, Ranjan said put the blame to the Government and the various colleges affiliated under the University.
Even if the last date of admission for the TDC 1st year had been completed in June, last year, Government as well as the college authorities kept on pressurizing the University for the extension of the last date even well into 2003, he elucidated, asking how can the University maintained an academic calendar in such a condition.
Highlighting on some of the achievement of the institution, Dr Ranjan said that the University had started functioning with just 8 faculties, but today there are in all 22 faculties.
The University is also becoming one of the top most and prestigious teaching and research centre.
Within a short span of its existence, the university has produced 500 PH D holders in various disciplines.
On other developmental plan of the University, he informed that a GIS Station would be soon opening up to monitor occurrence of earthquake.
