Imphal, July 23 2009:
The United Naga Council (UNC) has said that things now depend on the government of Manipur on whether there should be more agitations.
The UNC said that the adamant stand of the Government towards the demands of the tribal people to review the Cabinet decision of deploying police commandos and Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) in the hill districts of Manipur, is inviting more drastic forms of agitation.
If the Government fails to listen to the voices of the tribal people, the UNC will initiate democratic but stern forms of agitation soon.
Meanwhile, the Naga apex body in Manipur expressed its gratitude to all the civil and student organisations which had extended support to the just concluded UNC, ANSAM, NWUM and NPMHR sponsored 48-hour bandh in protest against the State government decision to deploy IRB and police comandos in the hill districts.
The UNC, however, decried the alleged brutal action meted out to the people at Yaingangpokpi area by the 25th Assam Rifles personnel during the bandh and the incident where the IRB personnel reportedly picked up seven innocent civilians at the Sugnu area.
